Ultraman - SNES Review

Quite frankly, this game stinks.  There are eight stages with monsters that you battle through.  You knock their power down until it says finish and you shoot a laser at them to kill them.  The moves are basic and the game play is super slow and boring.  Another thing that sucks about this turd of a game is that there is no 2 player mode.  If it had 2 player vs mode it might have made the game a little easier to swallow.  Music is repetitive and boring, and sound is sub par for the system.  Overall, I give this game a 3 out of 10 stars.  Nothing special about it and if you want it in your collection, don't pay more than a buck for it.

Zero 4 Champ - PC Engine Review

Basically, what you see in the picture above is the entire game.  It is a drag racing game where you control only the gas and shifting.  There are a few modes to the game.  Story mode - Not understandable unless you can read Japanese.  Vs Computer mode, and Vs Man mode.  You can pick between 4 cars and "race" the opponent.  Once you get the hang of the controls, it is very easy to win.  Overall, a boring game that I will more than likely never play again.  It gets 3 stars total.  Not even worth looking into unless you are really into this type of game.

Harbor Escape - Atari 2600 Review

Released in 1983 by a company called Panda.  This is a direct rip off of River Raid by Activision.  In this game you are a submarine under water and you have to squeeze your way through some pretty tight areas.  The fuel tanks from River Raid are replaced by air tanks and there are other subs and moving mines.  I think this version may be a bit harder than River Raid but it still pretty much plays the same and is the same game.  Overall, it gets a 3 out of 10 because of the crappy graphics and the fact that they stole River Raid's code.

Mad Dog McCree - Sega CD Review

This was originally an arcade laser disc game.  It is more of a gimmick on the Sega CD.  The limitation of the graphics for the full motion video make this game just about unplayable.  I suppose if you memorize everything you can go through it.  I also suppose if I had a light gun for the Genesis it would be more fun.  I played it with the controller for awhile and it was alright, kind of boring.  Overall, I give this game a 3 out of 10 stars.  More of a gimmick than a game.

X-Perts Sega Genesis Review

Late release Genesis game that in my opinion is pretty boring.  Released in 1994 and making use of the 6 button controller is X-Perts.  The graphics are pretty good but the rest of the game is lacking.  It is slow and sluggish, and the game play is terrible.  The whole point of the game is that you switch between 3 characters in real time and try to do missions where you disable computers and restart elevators, etc.  It gets boring and repetitive after about 10 minutes.  Overall, I give this game a 3 out of 10 stars.  There is nothing really special about it and it is really not even worth playing.

Skykid NES Review

This game is terrible in my opinion.  The graphics are sub par for the NES, even early NES.  The music is repetitive and not very good.  The game play is atrocious.  It is difficult to control the plane and it seems like you never get the hang of it.  The purpose of the game is to fly your plane through each stage, picking up a bomb, bombing a target, and then landing.  I think this is a direct arcade port.  Overall, I give the game 3 out of 10 stars.  Maybe people like this game? Not I.

Black Hole Assault Sega CD Review

Yet another beat 'em up game for the Genesis.  This one in my opinion is really bad.  The moves are limited and the game play is shotty.  As with almost all Sega CD games, the sound, music, and graphics for the cut scenes are great, but the actual game is lacking.  The graphics for the game are pretty good for Sega CD but the game play ruins this game.  You basically travel to different planets fighting robot enemies one on one.  I am not of big fan of fighting games anyway but this one really falls short.  It gets boring after the first fight and never gets any better after that.  Overall, I give this game a 3 out of 10 stars.  Mediocre and not fun at all.

Alpha Mission NES Review

This is supposed to be a port of an arcade game.  Not a good port at all.  I have played the arcade version before and it is pretty good.  This game is not good at all.  Unfortunately, shoot em ups on the NES are historically not good and this one falls right into place with that mantra.  It is super slow (that is not always a bad thing) and the game play is horrible. First off there are way too many power ups (yes, you can have too many power ups) and that makes the game not very fun.  When you upgrade your shot, it is still weak and the enemies move way to fast.  Don't get me wrong, I love a challenging game but if the game play sucks, it ruins the whole thing.  You can press select to go into a power up select mode and you have energy that depletes when you use these power ups.  The boss fights are super challenging because they move about 5 times faster than your ship does even when fully powered up.  It is also frustrating that you can't tell if you are doing damage to a boss because it appears that your shots pass right through them.  There is no sound of flash to indicate that you are doing damage.  The game kind of plays a lot like Xevious with a double shot and the slowness.  Overall I give the game 3 out of 10 stars.  This one will sit of the shelf for a long time.

Eswat: City Under Seige Sega Genesis Review

This is a port of a decent arcade game.  This game however is not very good.  It is nothing like the arcade version at all.  They made it into a completely different game.  No score, no time limit, almost non existent power ups.  The game starts off looking and playing like the arcade game but then after about 2 minutes you realize it is not the same game.  It is very boring.  It was turned into a adventure platformer instead of arcade side scroller.  The point of the game is to clear stages and collect robot suit pieces to turn into the ultimate swat team robot.   There is an option menu at the start with a difficulty select between easy, normal, and hard.  There is also a sound / music test.  The graphics and sound are about on par with an early Genesis release, nothing special going on.  The game play is not too bad, its just not what you expect out of the game.  Overall, I give it a 3 out of 10.

Kid Kool NES Review

Kid Kool and the quest for the seven wonder herbs is the full title for this platformer on the NES.  The game is super repetitive.  Not a good kinda Super Mario repetitive either.  The game play is horrendous.  It is one of those games where you feel like you are playing in double gravity.  The controls are not very responsive at all and it is very hard to get used to.  Another thing that drives me crazy about the game is that when you jump up beyond the limitation of the screen, it stops and scrolls the screen up.  It you are running and you jump to clear a water hazard of something, it has to redraw the screen twice.  Trust me, it sucks trying to play with that going on.  Overall, I give the game a 3 out of 10 stars.  Not very good at all and I will probably never play it again.

High Speed NES Review

I don't care for video pinball games.  This one is nothing spectacular.  It is a port of an actual pinball game.  It seems very sluggish and repetitive.  It gets really boring after a few games and doesn't really have much going one.  I think they could have done a lot better with this game.  It seems thrown together and not very well done.  They tried to spice it up a bit by putting in little obstacles that capture your ball and stuff but it really fell short.  This game has a low re-playability and will more than likely sit on the shelf for years and years.  Overall I give it a 3 out of 10 stars.

Air Diver Genesis Review

Here is an Afterburner clone for the Sega Genesis.  In my opinion this game sucks.  I am not a big fan of fighter jet sims anyway.  This game has hardly any control.  It is difficult to control and it is very repetitive.  You do have a stage select but every stage looks identical to me.  There are some options like increasing the difficulty and starting with a higher or lower amount of players but this game really falls short.  The graphics are very bad for the Genesis.  The sound effects are not that good either.  Overall I give this game 3 out of 10 stars.  Not fun at all and super repetitive.

Karate Kid NES Review

This game is not very good for many reasons.  When you start the game you are in a Karate tournament stage where you fight 3 people.  This is literally stand in place and keep pressing kick while the other guy runs into your foot repeatedly.  After you take 6 seconds to beat that you go through an Okinawa stage where it is basically just run through the stage as fast as you can while avoiding the thugs that come at you.  I suppose you could take your time and build up score <shrug>.  There are bonus stages where you have to go into the doors in the huts.  It is really just a black void that is very awkward to make your character enter.  It is hard to explain, you just have to play to see what I am talking about.  You have 3 different bonus stages that randomly come up.  Swinging hammer, ice block break, and chopstick fly catch.  The bonus stages give you crane kicks and drum punches which work if you are standing still and press the jump or punch button.  The next stage is a little trickier because you are now in a typhoon where you are walking against the wind.  There are sticks and bird that run into you and knock you back.  You can still use the run as fast as you can through the stage strategy however.  Next stage is a rocky desert like stage with some increased difficulty.  I think after that is another tournament with the boss and I think you can stand in one spot and kick and have him run into your kicks just like the beginning of the game.  The game is not fun at all and gets boring very quick.  Overall I give it a 3 out of 10.  Maybe good for younger or non experienced gamers?

Karate Champ NES Review

Another port of an arcade game for the NES.  I never really cared for this game growing up.  I thought it was too difficult to control and that translates over to the NES as well.  It is a great port however and the graphics are spot on.  I just don't care for the game at all so I don't really have much to say about it.  Overall it gets a 3 out of 10 stars on my scale.  It only got those 3 stars because of its music and great match to the arcade version.

Adventures of Dino Riki NES Review

This game is not fun at all.  Number 1, I hate forced scrolling games which this is.  Number 2, the more speed power-ups you get, the harder the game is.  I don't really have anything else to say about this game.  I give it a 3 out of 10 mostly for graphics.  I just plain dislike this game, period.

8 Eyes NES Review

This game is a weak Castlevania 2 Simons Quest clone.  It has a stage select when you start, you can select 8 different cities in the world.  I tried about 3 of them before I got bored.  The game is so repetitive that it puts you to sleep.  You have this bird thing on your shoulder that I guess someone using controller 2 can control, but other than that there is nothing special about this game.  Maybe I am missing something?  I give this game a 3 out of 10.  Game play and graphics are almost identical to Simon's Quest and although it seems challenging, it is very difficult not to get bored and just give up after about 10 minutes due to the repetitiveness.
