Super SD System 3 Review

You can purchase this device at https://shop.terraonion.com/en/ for 240 Euros with shipping.  It comes out to roughly $300 US.  Option number two: you can buy from my favorite video game store https://stoneagegamer.com/ for $299 US plus shipping.  The advantage of buying it from Stone Age Gamer is that you get it shipped faster, and if there is an issue, you can call them for support.  I had a minor issue with the audio and they worked with me and found out it was a cable issue.  They gave me a free cable and a new unit!  So what does this thing do for $300?  Everything!  It first and foremost emulates the CD-ROM unit allowing PC Engine and Turbo Grafx 16 CDs to be played on either system (all region free).  The device plugs into the back of either a TG-16 or a PC Engine where the CD-ROM would plug in.  It has a micro SD (up to 256gb supported but 128gb is plenty of space) slot on the side to put the CD images on.  As if CD support wasn't enough, you can also read TG-16 and PC Engine HuCards from this device!  Oh yeah, and it has direct RGB out the back, using a Genesis / Megadrive 2 cable.  Also, it gets its power from the console so it requires no external power!  It also has no moving parts.  I forgot to mention that it has the PC Engine Arcade Card built in also and a handy green LED that flashes showing the loading from the SD card.  When you power the system on with the Super SD System 3 attached, it will take you to a menu system where you can load all your games.  This device works flawlessly and I would highly recommend it to anyone that is considering getting a DUO or a CD-Rom attachment.  Lets face it, this is the way most everyone will get to play all the exotic, expensive games that you can't afford.  Well worth the $300 investment.  Highly recommended! 

Ray Engel Cancer Fund

I have known Ray for 26 years, since we were in 6th grade. I worked with him for 14 years at Huron Valley Home Care Supply in Highland. Ray is one of the nicest people I have ever met in my life. He would go out of his way to help anyone out time and time again. He has had a bit of bad luck lately. He had testicular cancer a few years ago that came back recently. This time, a large mass grew in his abdomen pressing on his Aorta and kidneys. He suffered a heart attack and is currenty in the hospital and has been diagnosed with cancer. He is currently undergoing Chemotherapy treatment to combat this. Ray doesn't have any insurance and is going to need help with medical bills. To make things worse, his wife left him and abandoned their 2 kids. To make things worse, before she left, she sold all of Ray's belongings including his Ham Radio gear which he used to help the community with emergency communications and severe weather spotting. The radio gear alone was worth thousands of dollars. He has house and car payments, 2 kids and he will be out of work for sometime. Please, if you can spare something, anything, I am sure he will be more than grateful. 8 Bit Evoultion

I found a really cool website / store / online store.  Its called 8 Bit Evolution.  You can find their store in the state of PA or here: http://8bitevolution.com/   Awesome site / store.  They sell all kinds of unique items from custom painted game consoles to awesome gaming T Shirts.  You can also sell you games to them by sending them a list of what you want to sell and they will email you a quote.  One of the coolest things I think that they sell are a complete set of N64 top labels!  Check these guys out today!

The Arcade Brighton, Michigan - Review

I just happened to drive by this place and saw a sign that said "We buy and sell arcade machines."  This led me to believe it was just a business that bought and sold arcade machines (which you don't see too much anymore)  So I stopped with my wife and 11 year old son in the car.  They said they will wait in the car.  I told them I would be out in a few minutes, I just wanted to run in and check it out.  I walked in the door and my jaw dropped when I saw about 50 pinball machines and 50 arcade machines on an upper level.  I noticed the token machines and realized that this was an arcade.  I ran back outside like a little kid that just discovered a new toy store or candy store.  I couldn't even speak.  I believe all I said to my wife and kid was "You have to come in here and see this."  That was about a month and a half ago and I have been back 3 times since.  This place is absolutely awesome.  They have all the best pinball machines and arcade machines I remember when I was a kid.  The people that work here are super friendly and helpful.  My wife and son love the pinball games and I love the classic games on the upper level.  My favorites are Dig Dug, Moon Patrol, Galaga, Wizard of Wor, Ms Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Super Punch Out to name a few.  They even have Dragon's Lair!  My only problem with the place is that I lose track of time playing all the awesome games.  Before of after you check this place out be sure to hit Ritters frozen custard just down the road to the West.  Also, they have the difficulty set on easy on a lot of the machines so kids can have a good time playing them as well.  I even noticed that one of the Ms Pac-Man machines had the speed up enabled which is cool.  A small suggestion that I would have would be to put a 3X5 card on each machine telling what enhancements are turned on and what difficulty level it is at.  I know a lot of hardcore gamers like myself love that type of info when going for high scores.  Also, every time I visit, they have more and more new machines running.  I give this place a perfect 10 out of 10 stars and I am glad that it opened and hopefully will be around for a very very long time.  Check out their facebook page for more info and hours at https://www.facebook.com/thearcadebrighton

NES bootleg

So I found this out in the wild today.  I paid 12 bucks for it.  I figured that was a pretty good deal considering that I have never seen one in person, ever.  20 games in one.  No end label.  Games are in numerical order on the front exactly how they are spelled - Waterpipe 2, Waterpipe 1, Battle City, F1-Race, Road Fighter, Execite Bike, Base Ball, Pin Ball, Mahjong 2, Exerion, F-16 Star Force, Knights in Fight, Kung-Fu, Donkey Kong 3, Galaza, Ice Llimber, Pac Man, Circus Charlie, Wild Geese Honting, Gun Fighting in Grano West.

Notice, there is no label but the same caution message is embossed on the back.  Also, those are not screw holes.  The whole thing is made of crude, cheap plastic and snaps apart.

Look!  It appears to be a Famicom board with a NES 72 pin adapter.  Odd.  Also, notice on the left, on the adapter, there is another IC chip crudely soldered to the pins.  Maybe something to do with disabling the NES 10 lockout chip?

Anyway, time to fire this thing up.

Here is the title / select screen.  Notice the Bubble Bobble character even though Bubble Bobble is not on the cart.  He is shooting bubbles.  Most of the games are named different than what is listed on the front and they are labeled A through T.  Game A Super Kid (2) or number 1 Waterpipe 2 is Super Mario Bros. with a hacked title screen that says Super Kid instead of Super Mario Bros.  Game B Super Kid (1) or number 2 Waterpipe 1 is a Mario Bros.  It is so glitchy that when you jump it only half jumps.  The turtles act weird and bounce backward on the top of the screen and appear to be eating the zero on the end of the score.  The game is unplayable.

This is game C - Battle City.  It is a 1 or 2 player tank battle game with 35 selectable levels and a construction mode to make your own levels.  It is like a suped up version of Combat for the Atari 2600.  It is actually pretty cool.

Game D - Zippy Race is a Pole Position clone with 3 selectable tracks.  It plays pretty smooth and is almost identical to Pole Position 2 for the Atari 7800.  Game E - Road Fighter is just like the NES version.  Game F - Excite Bike is the same as the NES version except that everywhere it is supposed to say Nintendo in the background has been taken out so it is just blank signs.  Game G - Baseball is the same as the Famicom version with the Nintendo's taken out.  It has Japanese writing in it.  Game H - Pin-Ball looks identical to the NES version.  The flippers seem a little faster however.  Game I - Mahjong is a Mahjong game with Japanese writing.  Game J - Fire-Peacock is Exerion for the Famicom.  Game K - Thunderbird F-16 is Star Soldier with no title screen.

Game L - Zingia is a weird Kung Fu Heros style game.  It is way faster though.  Game M - Yie Ar Kung-Fu is the Famicom version of the arcade game.  Game N - Gorilla is Donkey Kong 3 with a hacked title screen that says "Gorilla 3".  Game O - Galaga is the same as the NES version.  Game P - Ice Climber is the same as the NES version with a slightly different title screen and a stage select of all 32 stages.  Game Q - Pac-Man looks and plays identical to the NES version.Game R - Circus is identical to Circus Caper for the NES except for a hacked title screen that says "Circus Troupe".  Game S - Duck Hunt looks and plays identical to the NES version.  Finally, Game T - Wild Gunman also looks and plays the same as the NES version expect maybe a slightly different title screen.

Weird stuff overall.  Not a bad pickup for 12 bucks.  Anyone know what it is worth?  I have not been able to locate another copy anywhere online.

Garage Sale Finds

First garage sale I stopped at, I picked up Battletoads and Circus Caper for the NES for $2 each. Second one I stopped at, I got a Genesis Model 1 with 2 controllers, A Sega CD model 1, a Sega 32X with 6 games which are Doom, Knuckles Chaotix, Star Wars Arcade, Spiderman, Blackthorne, and Tempo. Also Castlevania Bloodlines and Xmen for the Genesis and the secret of Monkey Island for Sega CD all for $20. The third garage sale I stopped at I picked up a Gameboy Pocket Red for $3 with a snowboarding game and a nascar game and like 4 empty gameboy plastic cases. Overall, not a bad haul. Everything works except the 32X. It is not putting out a proper video signal for some reason. If anyone knows how to fix it, let me know.

Last weekends finds and this weekend

Last weekend I went to a garage sale in a local trailer park and saw a Super Nintendo with 2 controllers and all the hook ups with 8 boxed games with a price tag of $30 on it.  Now $30 dollars is a hell of a deal considering that the games were: Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2, Super Mario RPG, Warios Woods, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 3, Toy Story, and Super Star Wars.  I asked if she would take $20 and she said YES!!!  Awesome find.  BTW, it is an early SNES with the plastic tabs, not the metal ones.  The SNES is in awesome shape and works great.  Both controllers are also working great.  The system and the games are clean and awesome!  I also picked up at various different hidden locations :), Zelda: A Link to the Past for 12 bucks and for the NES: Baloon Fight (5 screw), Boulder Dash, and Thundercade for $4 each.  This past weekend I grabbed Caesars Palace for the Genesis for $1 and Super C, and Gradius for the NES for $3.50 each.  I also picked up Blue Marlin for the NES for $4.  I have wanting that one for awhile now.  I also picked up a Coleco Telstar Alpha Pong machine for $7 but have yet to test it because it didn't have a power adapter.  It does however take 6 C batteries.  Here is a link to what it looks like http://www.pong-story.com/coleco_alpha.htm  The last stop of the weekend was a garage sale where I snagged two generation 1 Sega Genesis consoles with 1 RF modulator, 1 S video cable, 2 controllers (3 button), 2 power adapters, and 4 boxed games which are Toxic Crusaders, Twin Cobra, Winter Olympics (Mega Drive) and NHL All Star Hockey '95 all for $10.  It was a good 2 weeks with some awesome finds.  Good luck and happy hunting!

Garage Sale Finds

One of the first sales of the day and Piper (my wife) spotted Burgertime for Intelivision CIB for $2.  I had to get that of course.  Later on I picked up Hey You Pikachu for N64 for $2 also.  Then the last garage sale we went to, I picked up Dragon Quest 8 for PS2 CIB and Xenosaga episode 1 CIB for $1.75 each!  Not too bad of a day for game hunting.

Atari weekend

First stop was Toy Box and Treasures in Waterford on Saturday.  I picked up a ton of games for 30 bucks.  7800 games - Donkey Kong Jr, Dig Dug, Mrs. Pac-Man, Centipede, Choplifter, and Galaga.  Atari 2600 games - Phoenix, Galaxian, Venture (red label), Wizard of Wor, Popeye, Donkey, Kong (red label), Pitfall!, and Megamania.  Today, I went to Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor and Taylor Town Flea Market.  I picked up Defender for the Atari 400/800.  I also got for the 7800 at 2 bucks each, Karateka, Xevious, and Food Fight.  I picked up for the 2600 - Defender, Demon Attack, Riddle of the Sphinx, Space Shuttle, Zaxxon, Surround, Stellar Track (Sears), Asteroids, Space Invaders (Rare Sears), Decathlon, Pac-Man (Rare Sears), and Adventures of Tron.  I only picked up 1 game at Gibraltar which was H.E.R.O.  the ever elusive full graphic label rare version for $5.25.  This game goes on Ebay for anywhere from $45 to $120.  Overall a nice Atari grab for the weekend!

River Raid and the Atari 400

So everyone has played River Raid on the Atari 2600 right?  Well, have you ever played it on the Atari 400 computer?  It is awesome.  The Atari 2600 version is awesome, don't get me wrong, but the Atari 400 version rocks!  The graphics are better and there is a lot more stuff going on.  There are tanks on the shore / bridges that shoot at you, there are hot air balloons, and the shoreline has definition.  The Atari 400 computer is far superior to the 2600 VCS.  I guess it was a lot more expensive back in 1978 when it came out so it's processor is better.  I plan on picking up more 400 games on ebay or wherever I can find them.  I see them out in the wild occasionally and I always try to pick them up when I see them.  I got River Raid, Super Breakout, and Basic Programing for 4 bucks each at a secret location in South Lyon a few days ago.  I picked up Frogger and Asteroids at a flea market a few weeks ago as well.  I also have Missile Command, Pac Man (Awesome port!), Star Raiders, Donkey Kong, and Centipede.  I also just bought Pitfall on Ebay yesterday for a mere $6 shipped.  I am looking forward to that one as the graphics and sound should also be far superior to the 2600.  Man I love the Atari computer!

Intelivision / Arcade cabinet

Well, the Intellivision works. I picked up "Sea Battle" with the overlays this weekend from Destiny Games an awesome place, check them out. I did also pick up an Odyssey 2 for 25 bucks with 4 games, however it doesn't power up. I plan to open it up in the near future and check to see if it maybe needs just a quick solder, I will keep everyone posted. On a plus note, I got a free Pentium 4 Dell tower from my neighbor to possibly resurrect the MAME cabinet. I have been going through Moon Patrol withdraws lately! He said it needs a hard drive but that is not an issue, I have about 4 40GB hard drives laying around here. Looks like a 4th of July project to me. I also picked up a few 2600 games over the weekend. I will be doing some reviews on here in the near future, so stay tuned!

I went to a moving sale around the block from my house a few days ago. I walked up and a guy came outside and said "everything is for sale inside the house" So I walked in and to a back enclosed porch area and spotted a Nintendo 64 controller and grabbed it. Nothing was priced but I overheard the guy saying "If you see anything make me an offer, everything's for sale." I immediately spotted a Turbografx 16 with a Legendary Axe HuCard in it so I grabbed that too. No power supply or RF cord but I snarfed it up quickly. I went into a den area and spotted an Intellivision which I also quickly grabbed. I looked around for a few more minutes and didn't see anything else worth while. I took the stuff to the guy and he said how about 10 bucks? Sold! I got back home and hooked up the Turbografx 16 with my Retron 3 power supply, which was the same specs and used my Atari 7800 RF cable. It powered up but just a white screen. I took the HuCard out, blew some dust out of the card slot and used some brass polish on the HuCard. It fired up to the main screen! I went on Ebay and bought a used Turbografx controller which is on the way so I can test it (fingers crossed). I don't have any Intellivision games but I plugged that in and it does power up as well as put out an RF signal. We will se what happens with that. The Intellivision is in pretty bad shape and the controllers look bad so I am not holding out too much hope for it. I will keep you posted as to what happens with both systems. I had several TG16's back in the day and it is a pretty fun system. I don't think I have ever played an Intellivision however. I am pretty stoked about the TG16 though. It was one of the systems I have been thinking about getting again along with the Sega Master System.
